Costumes should be light colored, preferably florescent or have reflective tape attached.
• When selecting costumes, masks, wigs, or beards, be sure they are made of flame retardant materials.
• Avoid outfits with loose, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts. Keep hemlines short enough to prevent tripping.
• Avoid facemasks that obstruct vision or breathing. A natural mask of cosmetics applied to the skin is the safest.
• Use battery powered lights, never candles, to light jack-o-lanterns.
• Stay well away from any form of open flame, especially bonfires outdoors, and fireplaces indoors.
• Be careful with fall decorations such as cornstalks and hay bales. Keep these items away from heat sources and don't allow these decorations to block exit doors.
• Watch for obstacles when you cross yards, such as garden tools, water hoses, and lawn sprinklers.
• Be sure to check your candy carefully before eating Halloween treats.
• An adult should always accompany young children.
• Never go inside a stranger’s home.
• Carry a flashlight.
