X. Items from Council.
Councilman Marrs welcomed back Mayor Cornett from his trip to Washington, D.C. He stated it was a great weekend in Oklahoma City with the NCAA Basketball Tournament and all the events in downtown.
Mayor Cornett commented over the weekend, the NCAA Basketball Tournament was held at the Ford Center, the Future Farmers of America Horse Show was at the Fairgrounds and the Christian Homeschool Basketball Tournament was at the Southern Nazarene University. He noted any other time, the City would be grateful for just one of those events during a weekend.
Councilman McAtee reported the National Christian Homeschool Basketball Tournament was held at venues all over the city with over 3,000 attendees. There were approximately 250 teams from 23 states. He reported the event was a great success and an economic boost to the City. He also announced his 12 year-old granddaughter was named to the All-American Team.
Councilman McAtee announced to the residents of Windsor Forest that Bill Claffin has coordinated a presentation with the Oklahoma City Police Department regarding homeland security. It will be presented at Forest Christian Church on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. He encouraged residents to attend.
Councilman McAtee asked City Manager Couch to forward his thanks to Chief Citty and Mr. Wendel Whisenhunt, their joint efforts have resolved the situation at Woodson Park. He commended them for their efforts, noting the program worked and the residents are very grateful.
Councilman White stated his dog problem was resolved. He thanked Animal Control for taking care of it and he appreciates their hard work. He stated Animal Control picked up a litter of puppies and while they were walking to their vehicle, two puppies were adopted.
Councilman White attended the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours Meeting this last week. He reported the meeting was extremely rewarding. It was well attended and it is a well run organization. He believes the organization will be beneficial to south Oklahoma City.
Councilman Foshee attended the NCAA Basketball Tournament this past weekend. He said the City handled the tournament very well, noting other venues were set up around the Ford Center. He believes Oklahoma City is setting the standard for how events should operate. He attended two neighborhood meetings this week. One meeting was regarding an apartment complex, which he is still working on. He requested that Mr. Brum, Public Works Department, contact Brookwood Neighborhood Association regarding the road project. Councilman Foshee announced he was glad to be back. He recently went on a ten-day cruise for his 35th Wedding Anniversary.
Councilman Simank announced there is a Riverfront Trust Meeting at 1:00 p.m. Tonight at 5:30 p.m., there will be a Heritage Hills Neighborhood Association meeting. The social begins at 5:00 p.m. Councilwoman Simank wished everyone a Happy Easter.
Councilwoman Johnson announced a Neighborhood Conservation meeting at 2:00 p.m. today. She complimented John Calhoun, Planning Department employee, for his work regarding the Edward’s Addition Historical designation. Mr. Calhoun attended a meeting on Saturday, bringing along a representative from the State Historical Society. They answered all the questions residents had and explained the process. Over the weekend, she had an opportunity to take Dr. Finley to Edward’s Lake encouraging him to donate land to expand the lake. Councilwoman Johnson requested a meeting with the City Manager and Mr. Whisenhunt regarding this issue. Councilwoman Johnson wished everyone a “Happy Easter.”
Councilman Dobbs will be meeting with residents at Epworth Villa. He hopes the public appreciates the civic lesson they receive while watching Channel 20. Councilman Dobbs noted today’s vineyard issue is a prime example of how things are worked out. Everyone has an opportunity to be heard, there are no backdoor deals. He recognized Council tries to do what’s best for the applicant and still consider the effects toward the City as a whole.
Councilman Dobbs suggested Council consider setting up a zone where citizens can dispose of their tickets legally and crack down on ticket scalping. Mayor Cornett stated he believes the City handled it very responsibly, noting the persons arrested were trying to sell numerous tickets above face value.
Councilman Dobbs also expressed his concern regarding the resident who stated they had to sell their transportation in order to repair their home. He said there is something terribly wrong with that, especially when the residents were working so hard toward fixing up their home.
Councilman Dobbs thanked Mayor Cornett for meeting at the Pentagon working to ensure that Tinker Air Force Base does not become a casualty in the Federal cut backs. Mayor Cornett stated the first BRAT closure list will come out in May and we cannot breathe easy until then.
Councilwoman Johnson agreed that low-income families shouldn’t have to sell their cars to pay for house repairs. She encouraged the public to contact their congressmen to save Community Development Block Grant funds.
