Mr. Rinehart announced the National Square Dance Association is holding a convention
at the Cox Convention Center, June 24-26, and 10,000 square dancers will be in attendance.
Mr. Rinehart said the Convention and Visitors Bureau is doing a wonderful job of
bringing events to Oklahoma City.
Mr. Rinehart asked staff to re-evaluate the boundaries of the Neighborhood Revitalization
Strategy Area for building block programs, Community Development Block Grant funds
and other funds that might be available.
Mr. Rinehart said the positive citizen attitude following the recent tornados is
probably attributed to the fact that loss of life was minimized. He thanked the
local meteorologists for giving out life-saving information and the City staff for
installing new warning sirens. He also thanked Fire Chief Benson for providing early
assistance to the citizens and the fire fighters for their professionalism and hard
work.
Mr. Rinehart thanked Police Chief Berry and his officers for controlling the traffic
and the situation in southeast Oklahoma City. He thanked Mike Hull at OG&E for
getting power back to citizens so quickly. He thanked Jim Couch, City Manager, and
Paul Brum, Public Works Director, for keeping him informed about the situation and
for coordinating all the efforts. Mr. Rinehart also thanked the First Southern Baptist
Church and the Baptist Association for providing meals for the volunteers and tornado
victims. He thanked the citizens of Oklahoma City for pitching in and helping other
citizens. He said we are very fortunate to be equipped and trained to handle such
emergencies.
Mr. Foshee asked the City's Legal Department to look at an incident where a city
inspector was injured at a job site. He said apparently The City is coming back
after the builder on the subrogation rights of their comp carrier. Mr. Foshee said
a dangerous precedent is being set and asked the Legal Department to explain why
The City is taking this action.
Mr. Foshee asked if larger No Bicycle signs could be placed around the Earlywine
walking track. He said many people are ignoring the signs that are already in place.
X.
Mr. Foshee said The City is planning to remove water meters from some of the
neighborhoods. He said developers have asked if they could have an option to pay
for the water before the meters are removed. Mr. Couch said there are some neighborhoods
that were grandfathered in and get free water for their planting beds and assured
Mr. Foshee The City is not going to remove those meters without working with the
neighborhoods first.
Ms. Simank invited everyone to attend the Annual Primavera Festival this Saturday,
May 17, which celebrates the starting of spring. The festival will be held in the
Capitol Hill neighborhood at SW 25th Street and Commerce Street. Ms. Simank urged
everyone to try the great home cooking at Jaime's Grill in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
Ms. Simank said the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Downtown Transit Center would
be held today at 2:30 p.m. across from the Regency Tower.
Ms. Johnson thanked The City's staff and, in particular, Public Works, Police, Fire
and EMSA for their quick response during the tornados. She assessed the tornado
damage to northeast Oklahoma City and said it was fortunate nobody was killed.
Ms. Johnson said last Friday the Metro Youth and Development Organization, which
is our First Tee Program, had a fundraiser/golf tournament. She said there was a
great turnout and the tournament was finished in record time. She made a challenge
to have higher participation from the Council next year. She said the First Tee
Program is for all the children in Oklahoma City and gives them opportunities they
might not otherwise have and it teaches them life skills.
Ms. Johnson thanked Mick Cornett for handling the publicity for the golf tournament.
She thanked Horace Stevenson, Tournament Chairman, and Jim and Christy Everest,
Tournament Committee Members. Ms. Johnson also thanked Debi Martin who assisted
with the execution of the tournament. Ms. Johnson thanked Craig Humphreys, First
Tee Program President, and Steve Carson, Head Pro at Lincoln Golf Course, where the
event was held. She also thanked Lou Dechert, the new Executive Director of the
program. She said they all did a fabulous job.
Ms. Johnson asked what The City's plans are for removing trees and debris. Mr. Couch
said The City was in the process of procuring a contract to clean up and hoped to
have one in place by Thursday.
X.
Mr. Liebmann said there is a meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. for the Northwood Lake
Homeowners Association.
Mr. Cornett said there is a homeowners meeting tonight at Sun Valley Acres in the
far southwest corner of Ward 1.
Mr. Cornett praised City staff for the quick response last Friday night. He said
he went out that evening to survey the tornado damage and was really impressed with
how the communities of Warr Acres, Bethany and Oklahoma City were already working
together.
Mr. Cornett commended Oklahoma City broadcasters at Channels 4, 5, 9 and Fox for
serving Oklahoma City citizens so well during the tornados. He said the local channels
run no commercials during severe weather and lose hundreds of thousands of dollars
when there is a severe storm.
Mr. Bowman said he had some visitors this weekend from Augusta, Georgia, and took
them on the Bricktown Canal boat ride. He said the canal boat guide they had that
evening, Michael from New Orleans, did an excellent job of selling our city.
Mr. Bowman attended an award ceremony at Fire Station 11 on NW 50th Street and Shartel
Avenue last week. He said they recognized students from Putnam Heights and Horace
Mann Elementary for reading excellence. They have been doing this for nine years
with little or no publicity. He said a similar event was held at Fire Station 22
with Western Village School. He wondered what the impact might be if all fire stations
were to hold such an event every year.
