X.Items from Council.
Mr. Liebmann informed Council he has received a lot of calls about budget cuts in the Parks Department. He said it is obvious citizens take great pride in the parks.
Mayor Humphreys said he had a meeting with Wendel Wisenhunt, Parks and Recreation Director, and several concerned citizens recently. When the citizens heard Wendel talk about his plans for finding budget savings, they were greatly relieved. Mayor Humphreys said budget hearings would be held soon and asked everyone to reserve judgment until they learn about the planned budget savings.
Ms. Brooks said she and others are looking for creative ways for citizens to assist in planting flowers and maintenance of flowerbeds.
Mr. Liebmann said his recent campaign was challenging and fun. He felt the election outcome sent a strong message about Bass Pro. He said the Bass Pro project has brought two new hotels to Oklahoma City and the Skirvin will be renovated, in large part, due to Bass Pro.
Mr. Liebmann said the last weekend was wonderful downtown due to the NCAA tournament.
X.
Mr. Liebmann asked if a resolution from the City Council should be drafted in opposition to the House Bill 1725.
Mayor Humphreys said House Bill 1725 says in order for the School Board to close a school, a vote of the people in that area would be required. He said this bill is an intrusion on the right of the School Board to run the schools and said our legislative liaisons have been asked to work on this issue.
Ms. Simank said Debbie Blackburn, an urban area representative, spoke eloquently against this house bill during a recent house debate. She said Representative Blackburn was a real champion and thanked her for her support.
Mayor Humphreys said he was working with the State Senate and Pro Temp, Cal Hobson, to make sure this bill doesn't make it to the Senate.
Mr. Liebmann reminded everyone that The Greens Neighborhood Association has a meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. at The Greens Country Club. He also said the Fox Run Neighborhood Association meets Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and encouraged everyone to attend.
Ms. Simank thanked citizens for voting in all three elections last Tuesday. She said over the last several years, voter turnout has continued to decline and asked if there was anything the City Council could do to improve voter turnout.
Mayor Humphreys said changes might be made to The City Charter so the election dates won't coincide with spring break. He felt this might help improve voter turnout.
Ms. Simank said one of our Washington Congressmen recently suggested a state law requiring all municipal elections be held on the same date might help improve voter turnout. She said it was something to consider for future elections.
Ms. Simank asked God to bless our troops and asked everyone to keep them in their thoughts and prayers over the coming days.
Mr. Foshee said his son-in-law, serving in the military, is back and forth between Germany and Afghanistan and the sand storms are really making things difficult for them in the Middle East. He encouraged everyone to call or write to military personnel or their families and let them know you support them and are praying for them. He feels it is important for the morale of the troops to know we are behind them.
X.
Mr. Foshee thanked the citizens of Ward 5 for allowing him to run unopposed.
Mr. McAtee congratulated Mr. Liebmann and Ms. Simank on their campaign victories. He thanked Mr. Liebmann for selecting the Meridian hotel and convention area of Ward 3 for his victory party.
Mr. McAtee encouraged all neighbors in Westbury North and South to attend the meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the school on the corner of SW 29th Street and Morgan Road. Paul Brum, Public Works Director, will be on hand to discuss the plans for the widening of SW 15th Street from Sara Road to Morgan Road. He said the construction company would also be in attendance at the meeting tonight.
Ms. Brooks congratulated Mr. Liebmann and Ms. Simank on their campaign victories. She also congratulated Mr. Sam Bowman for winning in Ward 2 without a runoff.
Ms. Brooks asked the Council to form a committee charged with creating a process for notifying people about the ramifications of buying homes in a historic preservation district.
Mayor Humphreys said he would be in favor of having an ad hoc committee to review this process.
Ms. Brooks said she would submit a list of potential ad hoc committee members to the Mayor.
Ms. Simank suggested since Ms. Brooks would soon be retiring from the City Council perhaps she could find time to serve on this ad hoc committee.
Ms. Brooks said she could probably find time to serve.
Mr. Cornett congratulated the City Manager and his staff for the successful NCAA Tournament held in Oklahoma City over the weekend. He also congratulated Tom Anderson, Special Projects Manager in the City Manger's Office; Gary Desjardins, SMG Manager; and Tim Brassfield, All Sports Association Executive Director, for the success of the NCAA Tournament.
Mr. Cornett asked if it would be appropriate to send a letter of thanks to the NCAA for selecting our city for this tournament. He said Oklahoma City hosts the tournament again in two years and said tickets will go on sale one year from now.
X.
Mr. Cornett encouraged citizens to attend a neighborhood meeting tonight for Canyon North at Wiley Post Elementary School.
Mr. McAtee congratulated staff for getting the canal filled up for the weekend events. He said it added a lot to the ambience of the festivities.
