Mr. Cornett said a new professional was hired today for the tennis center. He thought the tennis center was a very fine facility and would be great for holding statewide and regional competitions. He felt the tennis center could bring in out-of-state residents and tourism, as well as provide recreational opportunities for our city. He felt the impending budget crunch might require looking for places to cut and he wouldn’t want to start with the tennis center.

Ms. Brooks agreed with Mr. Cornett’s comments and expressed her appreciation that someone else was interested in the welfare of the tennis center.

Mr. McAtee complimented the Oklahoma City RedHawks and Tim O’Toole for an outstanding Texas Ranger Caravan Friday night event that was held at the Westin. Mr. McAtee also congratulated Councilman Cornett for winning the trivia contest for that event.

Mr. McAtee thanked Councilwoman Johnson, Councilwoman Simank, and Debi Martin for preparing the paperwork and the recommendations, which precipitated his committee involvement with the National League of Cities.

Mayor Humphreys asked the visiting Youth Councilors from Ward 2 if they would like to comment on their attendance of the meeting. In the past, youth councilors sometimes attended meetings where there was little discussion and so Mayor Humphreys was glad they attended a meeting with lots of discussion.

Youth Councilor, Matthew Cagigal, said the meeting provided more examples of things you wouldn’t necessarily think the city would be involved with. He thought his participation had been a valuable learning experience.

Youth Councilor, David Fotouhi, commented how interesting it was to watch two opposing sides of an argument come together and compromise.

Mr. Rinehart congratulated the Blazers on being ranked number one in their division. He stated there were 17,000 in attendance at the Ford Center when they played Tulsa. Mr. Rinehart thanked the Blazers for everything they do for Oklahoma City and congratulated them for having a wonderful season.

Mr. Foshee congratulated the OSU Cowboys on a well thought out basketball game, which was fun to watch. He thought that the OSU coach’s strategy was excellent and they had a great victory.

Mayor Humphreys said it was significant that the Governor’s Ball was held at the Cox Center last night because four years ago the facility didn’t exist as it functions today.

Ms. Johnson welcomed the newest residents to Ward 7 — Governor and Mrs. Henry.

Ms. Johnson said the interviewing of candidates for the director of the First Tee Program has begun. She hoped there would be a director in place by February 15.

Mr. Liebmann said tomorrow, January 15, is the last day you can contribute to your country by paying your estimated taxes for 2002. He said it was a privilege to be able to do so and reminded everyone not to forget to pay the taxes.

Mr. Liebmann said a city without banners would be pretty dull. He thinks the Stockyards with the waving flags and banners were really nice to see. He said banners could be found in every city in this country and he thought something should be done to allow them to remain.

Mr. Liebmann said he reviewed the tape of last weeks meeting and asked Council to turn on the microphone when they make a motion.
