The Mayor of Oklahoma City calls elections by issuing proclamations.  Special Elections are held for amendments to the Charter, franchise elections, drilling for oil and gas, recall elections, mergers, referendum and initiative petitions, hotel/motel tax, sales tax, and bond elections.

Regular Elections are called to elect the Mayor and Councilmembers.

Since 2006, the Mayor’s Primary Election is held every four years on the second Tuesday of March.  If a candidate does not receive a majority vote, the top two candidates receiving the highest votes are declared “Nominees for the Primary” and a General Election is held on the first Tuesday in April to decide the winner.  The Mayor is elected at-large (City-wide).

Council elections are held on the first Tuesday in March of each odd-numbered year for which the term of the incumbent Councilmember expires.  If a candidate does not receive a majority vote, the top two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will placed on the ballot for the General Election to be held on the first Tuesday of April.

Oklahoma City holds non-partisan elections and there are no term limits.  The Mayor-elect and Councilmember-elect are sworn in on the first Tuesday following the General Election.

The Mayor receives $24,000 per annum and a Councilmember receives $12,000 per annum.
