Important new rules
about rabies
vaccinations.
The Animal Welfare Division is responsible for promoting public health and safety, for temporarily sheltering and providing humane disposition of unwanted or lost animals, and for promoting animal welfare so that pet ownership is a pleasure for owners without becoming a burden to the community.
Adoption
Although adopted pets are removed from our listings daily, there is still a chance
a pet you see here may find a home before you arrive. But there are always plenty
more! Come and visit the new shelter and meet all the pets who need a home.
Adoption Fees
New adoption and other fees in effect May 30, 2003.
How to Adopt
Call us at 405 297-3100. Or drop by the shelter (SE 29th & Bryant) to get more information and adopt a pet.
Where to Adopt
In addition to the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter, animal volunteer groups offer 'outreach' adoption services.
Selecting the right pet
Things to consider when selecting a pet.
A dog or a cat? Dogs and cats have very different personalities and temperaments. Cats are more independent than dogs but also need the same active care.
What breed? Every breed has its own characteristics. For instance, you may prefer a pet with short hair. Learn about the behavior and physical characteristics of the breed you're considering.
Do you have enough room? Large dogs generally don't do well in small apartments or places without a backyard. Select a pet that "fits" your home.
Does your lifestyle accommodate a pet? While owning a pet is a lot of fun, it is also a responsibility that lasts many years. Be sure you can provide proper care before adopting a pet.
If you need help selecting the right type of pet, have questions or want more information, talk to your veterinarian or an Animal Welfare Adoption Specialist.
Impounding
The Animal Welfare Division impounds lost or stray animals. Reclaiming a lost pet requires paying an impound fee plus daily room and board fees.
A vaccination fee may also be charged.
Rabies Observation
Any animal that bites a person must be destroyed and tested for rabies or held for a ten day observation period at the shelter or an animal hospital. Impounding, room and board fees are charged.
Other Services
Animal Welfare also disposes of dead animals for City residents and has humane traps for loan to catch stray cats and dogs.
Community education services, including a speakers bureau, are also available.
